CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL) – A number of reports of scams involving contractors have been reported in Cedar Rapids the past several weeks, and authorities are making sure the community is aware.
Cedar Rapids Police say the reports involve many victims and thousands of dollars lost to scammers. Victims report giving money upfront and then work is never completed. Unfortunately, in many cases, it’s scammers taking advantage of those who suffered damage from the derecho last August.
The City of Cedar Rapids Building Services Department has created the following website to help homeowners as they make repairs: www.cityofcr.com/homerepair. You should also verify the contractor you’re hiring is licensed in Iowa by calling 319-286-5929. Also, you’re encouraged to reported a scam contractor by calling 1-888-777-4590 or 1-515-281-5926.
The Cedar Rapids Police Department and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office offer the following recommendations regarding contractor hires:
- Be wary of contractors who show up at your door. If at all possible, deal with an established and reputable local business. Avoid the hard sell. A reputable company should always be willing to allow a customer time to think about an offer before having to commit to a contract or payment.
