According to Commander Michael Lutz of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, it’s simply being aware of your surroundings – always.

“Get your head out of the cellphone,” he said to scattered clapping and responses of “amen” from the attendees at Friday’s Lunch ‘N Learn at the Palm Coast Community Center. “Walk like you have a mission, walk with confidence, head up, look around. Neary 70 people munched on box lunches provided by the Palm Coast Parks and Recreation Department while Lutz talked about ways to stay safe.

And fortunately, he said, it starts with the fact that Flagler County is a very safe county – in the past four years, crime here is down just over 47%.

“We want to keep it that way,” he said. “We want to keep it safe.”

There are several ways the FCSO is working to accomplish that.

“We have technology that’s working for you to keep you safe and a lot of you don’t even know about it,” he said. License plate readers, which he said are stationed all over the county, can help if a car is stolen or if a driver has an active warrant.
