Former Dodge County deputy Craig Harbaugh, who pleaded guilty to federal wire and bank fraud charges, was found dead in his Fremont, Nebraska home Thursday.Harbaugh was scheduled to be sentenced on Friday. He faced a sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison.In a news release, the Dodge County Attorney said there was no indication of suicide or foul play in Harbaugh’s death, based on the preliminary investigation. An autopsy will confirm how he died.In February, 2021, Harbaugh pleaded guilty to his role in a Ponzi scheme that deprived six individuals and a bank of more than $10 million dollars. The six individuals lost $6 million.According to federal investigators, Harbaugh admitted to falsifying purchase orders for his business, Tactical Solutions Gear. And he falsely claimed to have existing contracts to sell firearms and tactical gear to law enforcement agencies and companies. The FBI said Harbaugh “exploited his position as a sheriff’s deputy to take advantage of victims who invested their life savings with him.”Harbaugh resigned from the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office in November, 2019 upon news of his 15 count indictment.
