Mississippi head coach Lane Kiffin is the leading candidate to be the head coach for the Miami football team if an opening occurs per Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports on the College Football Enquirer podcast. Wetzel told Pat Forde and Pete Thamel that infamous Miami booster Nevin Shapiro informed him about Kiffin.
Wetzel sent Shapiro a text who responded that Kiffin is the leading candidate with former Miami linebacker and head coach Randy Shannon as the defensive coordinator. Manny Diaz has been on the hot seat as the head coach of the Miami football team after a 2-4 start.
The firing of athletic director Blake James on Monday has increased speculation about the job security for Diaz. The mediocre season for Miami after beginning 2021 ranked as high as 14th has brought everyone down. Miami is 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the ACC in 2021 and 19-15 in three seasons under Diaz.
Shapiro was released from prison to home confinement after receiving a 20-year sentence in prison in 2010 as part of a $930 Ponzi scheme. Part of the fallout from the Ponzi scheme was Shapiro’s involvement as a booster with the Miami athletic department. Miami received significant sanctions due to the findings.
