The victim, a Kandivli resident, arranged the money after mortgaging gold ornaments that belonged to her mother and sister. Charkop police probing the case said the victim’s mother and sister were unaware of the fraud till recently when they checked the ornaments on October 6.
The cyber police unit at Charkop police station has sought details from the bank to track the money trails which will help them in locating the fraudster. A case of impersonation, cheating and fraud has been registered against the fraudster.
The victim, employed as a compounder in a doctor’s clinic at Navi Mumbai, has registered on a marriage portal in March. In June, the victim received a WhatsApp message from the fraudster who identified himself as Alex Patel and showed interest in marrying her. The fraudster claimed that he came across the victim’s profile on the marriage portal.
In the complaint, the victim said, “The fraudster kept calling and chatting with me for almost a week before he told me that he has sent a gift parcel which contained gold ornaments and another parcel in which Rs35 lakh has been sent.”
