Peterborough County OPP issued a warning about a scam going around involving online for sale listings.

Officers were called at about 1 p.m. Wednesday to investigate a fraud complaint made by a Douro-Dummer Township resident.

The complainant posted a “Snow Blower For Sale” ad on Kijiji. The asking price was $550, police said.

Someone used a fake telephone number and email address and contacted the complainant and reached an agreement on the sale of the snow blower, police said.

The scammer emailed the complainant a cheque for $1,300 that was to be printed and deposited, provided the name of a shipping company and advised the complainant to pay them with the remaining funds to ship the snow blower, police said.

The complainant went to a local bank branch and was advised by a teller that the cheque was fraudulent, police said.

The complainant did not lose any money but wanted to make the public aware of the scam.

Similar scams have recently been reported in the City of Kawartha Lakes, police said.

Police encourage scam victims to report incidents to police.
