Saikia was arrested on Sunday from his residence in Guwahati. On Monday he was produced in court. He produced a letter of settled dues with the bank and made public a letter of the bank claiming that there are no dues pending against him. The statement, issued on October 10, 2015, was signed by the then General Manager in-charge, H.N. Borah.
Saikia told media persons outside the court, “I was asked to appear before the court last month however I failed to appear and a non-bailable warrant was issued against me. I appeared and produced documents that point out that I have no dues pending against my name. The CBI has not subjected me to any interrogation.”
A case was registered against Saikia in 1998. CBI took over the case in 2001. Saikia’s elder brother, Debabrata Saikia, is a Congress leader and the leader of opposition in the state assembly.
