Ottawa’s largest taxi operator is warning of a card-skimming scam involving a group of “con artists” in the city impersonating taxi drivers with a fake BlueLine cab.

Coventry Connections president Marc André Way said Tuesday the scammers were using Taxi No. 163 and often worked as a couple sitting in the front seat.

They approach people at malls or busy areas and ask if they are looking for a taxi, then, once they reach their destination, the scammers say they can only accept a credit card due to COVID-19 restrictions.

They then “swap” cards and run up “a significant number of transactions” before the cardholder realizes they’ve been scammed, Way wrote in an email.

Ottawa police warned of a similar scam in September, when a fake BlueLine taxi was used in other reported incidents.

The Organized Fraud Unit investigation confirmed in September that a BlueLine marquee and licence plate were being used fraudulently.
