Charges come after two-year investigation of the fake relationship, during which the woman provided more than $50,000 to man she met online and believed was her romantic partner.

Two men from the Greater Toronto Area were arrested Sept. 27 and brought to Manitoba to face charges related to swindling a Thompson woman out of more than $50,000 through an online romance scam.

Amaechi Akalezi, 41, and Olenrewaju Agbaje, 25, appeared in court in Winnipeg Sept. 28 on charges of theft over $5,000 and fraud over $5,000.

The arrests resulted from a two-year investigation by Thompson RCMP and RCMP Major Crime Services that included numerous production orders to seize hundreds of pages of documents for police to review.

The victim first contacted Thompson RCMP in September 2019. In July of that year, she met a man on an online dating website and began to talk with him. Over the next several weeks, she was convinced by the man that they were in a romantic relationship and that he needed her financial assistance.

The suspects were arrested with the help of the Ontario Provincial police Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement Unit.
